Facility Features, Working Principle and Specifications
Facility Description
Facility Features
- The facility houses a Flux Hexa CO₂ Laser Cutting and Engraving Machine (AccuCut 1212) with a working area of 1200 × 1200 mm.
- The system uses a CO₂ DC glass laser tube (100 W), suitable for cutting and engraving non-metallic materials such as acrylic, wood, fabric, leather, paperboard, and certain polymers.
- Enables precision cutting, engraving, etching, and marking for rapid prototyping, visualisation, model fabrication, and research demonstrations.
- Operates via an optical motion control system, guided through 2-D design files (.dxf, .ai, .pdf, .svg formats).
- Equipped with:
- High-quality CO₂ focus lens (FL 75 mm) for fine beam focusing
- Repositioning accuracy up to ±0.1 mm
- Built-in air assist and fume extraction system for clean cuts
- 3 kVA UPS backup ensuring stable power for continuous operation
- Supported materials include:
- Acrylic sheets: up to 10 mm thick
- Wood: up to 4 mm thick
- Fabric: up to 6 mm thick
- Leather: up to 6 mm thick
Working Principle
- The CO₂ laser cutting process relies on converting electrical energy into concentrated infrared light (10.6 µm wavelength).
- The beam is directed and focused through mirrors and a lens onto the material surface, where:
- The focused laser energy heats and vaporises the localised material region.
- Air assist or inert gas blows away molten or burnt particles, producing a clean cut or engraved pattern.
- The motion system moves the laser head in X and Y directions according to the digital pattern, enabling accurate 2-D cutting and engraving.
- Depth of engraving is controlled by adjusting laser power, speed, and focus position.

Sample Preparation, User Instructions and Precautionary Measures
- Users must submit a vector design file (.dxf / .ai / .svg / .pdf) along with material details before slot booking.
- Material preparation:
- Only clean, flat sheets; remove protective film if required.
- No metallic materials permitted in CO₂ laser cutting.
- Machine setup:
- Verify laser focus and bed levelling before operation.
- Test small sample pieces for power and speed optimisation.
- Safety precautions:
- Only trained users may operate the laser under supervision.
- Always keep the machine enclosed during cutting.
- Never leave the laser unattended while operating.
- Ensure fume extraction and air assist are active.
- Avoid materials producing toxic fumes (PVC, polycarbonate, etc.).
- Use protective eyewear and follow lab safety protocols.
- Post-operation:
- Allow parts to cool before handling.
- Clean the laser bed and work area; remove debris and residue.
