Facility Features, Working Principle and Specifications

Facility Description

Facility Description

This facility is used for culturing mammalian cells pertaining to BSL-1 and BSL-2 conditions.

Features Working Principle

The Tissue Culture Facility is a biosafety-compliant laboratory designed for the culture, maintenance, and experimentation on mammalian samples under Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) containment. The facility is equipped to support a wide range of cell biology, microbiology research while ensuring operator safety, sterility, and environmental containment.

  • HEPA-filtered ventilation system ensuring proper airflow and containment.
Biosafety Cabinets for aseptic handling of biological samples
  • CO₂ Incubators – maintaining precise temperature, humidity, and CO₂ levels for mammalian cell culture.
  • Phase-Contrast and fluorescence microscope – for real-time cell monitoring.
  • Refrigerators & Freezers (4°C, -10-15°C, -80°C) – for media, reagents, and sample storage.
  • Liquid Nitrogen Cryostorage System – for long-term cell line preservation.
  • Centrifuges (Tabletop & High-speed) – for sample preparation and cell pelleting.
  • Autoclave

Rules:

  • Use of non-pathogenic cell lines.
  • Basic aseptic techniques for contamination control.
  • General waste disposal following standard guidelines.
  • Proper disinfection protocols (70% ethanol, bleach, UV sterilization).

This facility provides a state-of-the-art, safe, and controlled environment for academic and industrial research in cell biology, infectious diseases, and biomedical sciences.

Sample Preparation, User Instructions and Precautionary Measures

User Instructions and Precautionary Measures
  • Access Control – Entry is restricted to authorized personnel only.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Always wear a lab coat, gloves and shower caps.
  • Aseptic Handling – Work inside the Class II Biosafety Cabinet for all cell culture procedures.
  • Equipment Use – Follow SOPs for incubators, centrifuges, microscopes, and biosafety cabinets. Clean equipment after use.
  • Waste Disposal – Dispose of biohazardous waste in designated bins. Chemically disinfect before disposal.
  • Labeling – Clearly label all cultures, reagents, and waste containers with date and contents.
  • Spill Response – In case of a spill, immediately contain, disinfect, and report.
  • Precautionary Measures:
No food, drinks, or personal items inside the lab.
Always work with BSL-2 agents under containment in a biosafety cabinet.
Decontaminate work surfaces before and after use (70% ethanol).
Avoid aerosol generation when pipetting or centrifuging samples.
Use mechanical pipetting devices – never pipette by mouth.
Handle sharp objects with care and dispose of them in designated sharps containers.
Report any accidents, exposures, or equipment malfunctions immediately.

Following these guidelines ensures safety, sterility, and compliance while working in the tissue culture facility.
